Pros

Work family balance is great

Cons

Compensation is somewhat lower but you can negate that by opting Telecommute so you can enjoy great work life balance esp if you have little kids at home.

    I worked at Verizon

    Pros

Great people, both management and associates.
Salary and benefits were great but have eroded over time.
FiOS has not sold as well as was expected, and company is losing long time subscribers due to cheaper alternatives offered by cable and other competitors that are not hamstrung by outdated regulation.

    Cons

Constant layoffs. People dissapear, but in small enough numbers so that no financial reporting is required. Slow and constant attrition, with no end in sight.
Many managers and even associates worried about longevity of wireline side of company.
The wireless area of the business is now in control of the core business in the hopes their management style. This management team has never dealt with union workers. Even in this economic environment, I would not be surprised if a CWA/IBEW strike occurs later this summer (Aug 2011)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

FiOS is a fantastic product. Even if there is no video franchise in an area, selling that fat pipe to businesses would be a tremendous boon for Verizon. Former MCI sales teams need to push FiOS instead of outdated products (where available). Finish the build outs in areas already franchised. Even in its weakened state, the CWA will be a formidable opponent this upcoming contract. Don't underestimate them.
