Good Overall Company......Be Careful About Front Line Managers Because They Ultimately Are the Face of The Company

I worked at Verizon Wireless full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Get Along Well with Coworkers. The company is the best at what they do in the industry so you know it isn't going to go anywhere. The training is pretty good for new hires and also throughout the year to keep everybody on top of their game. The benefits are ok they were better when I started but still pretty solid as of when I left. Get discount on cell service and upgrades after 1 year. Being a retail job with lots of non 8-5 hours it may initially seem like work/life balance isn't great at times but all things considered if you plan it carefully and give managers enough time in advance notice then more often than not it will get approved. Very business centric culture it engrains other essential functions of store management and operations into the daily routine so everyone is well rounded.

    Cons

Sales Sales Sales Sales Sales defines who you are. Company is ran so Every employee is like a jack of all trades master of none culture. You are responsible for billing, tech support, sales, merchandising, cold calling, warm calling, and selling to the person who walk in the door but if you struggle with the sales part then you are essentially worthless regardless of ability or strengths in other areas. Most store and middle level managers are of the old school boss mentality and are good at cracking whips on people but not so much at development ....or in some cases even management and tend to be reactive instead of proactive. They tend to favor a scarlet letter style of management by humiliating low performing employees (examples include making lowest performing accessory sales agent carrying basket of accessories around store throughout course of day or having mandatory 7 am "training sessions" for low performing sales people (not everyone) and instructed by low performing store managers (not trainers)) Lots of politics and rewards for who you know rather than on merit and the handful of loyal employees i came across tend to be taken for granted instead of appreciated. Managers can and have doctored timesheets and computer trend forecasting tool generated schedules to make sure favorite people (usually themselves) get favorable days or hours off and avoid paying overtime hours worked at the expense of maintaining adequate staffing in the store.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Happy employees make better employees make better atmosphere and better customer experiences. When choosing who you want to manage your front line customer facing operations, choose wisely on merits and managerial qualifications not prior sales numbers or charming up or sex appeal. They are the best and biggest at what they do so there is little risk of catastrophe if something goes wrong for the moment..........but with evolving technology network coverage will be universal and with more and more no contract options people can defect in a heartbeat if they are not satisfied with store level service. Also make sure to reward the good employees more and make them know they are valued.
