Pros

Everyone genuinely cares about what they do, and the people they serve. They really stand by their values, and have done a good job at getting the best out of young and ambitious people. I don't know that anyone else in Columbia could get as much quality out of their employees as Veterans United has.

Cons

Since they are a young company who likes to promote from within, their mid level managers don't necessarily have the leadership and development skills to make the people under them better. They are developing and are generally strong performers, but don't have the maturity to develop their teams.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the faith in your employees, and work hard to keep the values and vision a focal point for everyone.

A great place to start, a poor place to land.

I have been working at Veterans United Home Loans full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The company culture is phenomenal. It is fun to go to work for a couple of years with other young professionals who are highly motivated and energetic. The company has it's heart in the right place with philanthropy and service to the community.

    Cons

You're worked extremely hard as an account manager for very little recognition and little chance of upward movement. Professional development at VUHL is virtually non-existent and so are genuine career opportunities. It's a good place to go to work to gain a little professional experience and pad your resume, however, it isn't going to offer the long-term career progression. Benefits are pretty average (they throw a lot of "freebies" in your face but don't offer much in line of retirement, work-life-balance, or tuition reimbursement).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's still got a start-up feel and is beginning to grow more and more corporate as more employees are added. Make sure to keep the 'fun' in the business and you'll continue to attract bright young talent from the University but, unless clear career paths are determined, you're going to lose those talented individuals for larger companies in STL and KC.

I have been working at Veterans United Home Loans as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

    - relaxed office, flexible hours, fresh fruit fridge, catered lunches on Monday, massages every other week, fun events for interns and entire company

    Cons

    - can be overwhelming at times with the various offices and everyone who works there

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - pay interns based on their job, not their department
