I have been working at Via Christi Health System full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

I have worked at Via Christi Health for over 20 years and feel very fortunate to work for such a great company. I don't feel like I could work for a better place.

Cons

I think there could be some improvements in how things are managed at Via Christi Health at mid level management.

I have been working at Via Christi Health System full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

A genuine concern for people as customers and employees. The historical, non-profit, focus on healthcare management is significantly refreshing. Stewardship is one of the core values, and ensuring that financial performance is maintained is critical. This is done, however, with a strong bent toward ensuring that patient care and employee satisfaction are priority.

    Cons

Similar to any organization with multiple campuses, you have to work at ensuring you stay in contact with your peers in other locations. It is easy to get involved in the day to day work and forget to reach out.

I worked at Via Christi Health System full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

They provide some valuable services to the community

    Cons

Inept management, ridiculous amounts of micromanagement, extremely poor treatment of staff, slashes in benefits and wage freezes, elimination of entire departments while paying lip service to "patient satisfaction."

In a word, Via Christi is a disaster. The management group that is currently in place began their tenure by eliminating the entire hospitality staff, shunting their duties to the nursing staff (because, hey, why not? when there are extra duties to be performed, just throw them at the nurses, amiright?).
They then went on the completely reshuffle the entire middle management structure without so much as a single question to the staff about their input/thoughts/feelings on the matter.

Then came the austerity measures. The management, blaming decreased census (anyone that has worked at Via Christi in the last three years knows that that is a blatant lie) and inadequate Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement, fired most of the PRN pool of nurses, and forced the rest into full time positions on floors. This was done not to increase pt. satisfaction and staffing levels, but because management felt that they could simply float the nurses from their new posts to anywhere they needed them and not have to pay the higher float pool wages (which, BTW, are paid a premium because of the flexibility that they require in their schedules and training). This was followed by months of inadequate staffing levels that had to be supplemented with contract nurses, at an even higher wage than the float PRN pool nurses were being paid. Brilliant financial maneuver, that.

The management then went on to attempt to eliminate the nurses that specialize in starting IV's, and only backed off because of the intense backlash from the staff that would have to relearn a skill while practicing on patients. Patient satisfaction does not increase when pts. are used as guinea pigs, IMO.

The next item on the agenda was to pick a fight with the largest surgical group in Wichita by attempting to strongarm them into an exclusive contract with Via Christi. The surgeons responded by boycotting St. Francis and Harry St. Via Christi for two weeks, bringing the OR's at both to a near standstill. Again, blame was laid everywhere but at the door of those actually guilty. Anyone detecting a pattern here yet?

Most recently, management has announced hikes in insurance premiums, child care, and huge cuts in "guaranteed" benefits, e.g. the Via Christi contribution to employees' retirement accounts has dropped from 5% to 1.5%. In addition, a wage freeze has been implemented (rumored to be a 48 month freeze, no less). I have friends at the hospital that are paying money to work because of the reduction in hours combined with the fact that they must pay the full amount for child care even if they are not using it all the time (some employees are paying over $2000 per month for child care).

The arrogance of the management of Via Christi is staggering. They continue to lay blame everywhere else, while defending decisions such as the opening of Via Christi St. Theresa, which has operated at a loss every single month it has been open, and averages a census of approximately 15%. Via Christi has been running in the red to the tune of millions of dollars since the expansion, and yet continue to blame "incidental overtime, decreased census, and Medicare compensation" for the losses. The topper is that the management fully expects to be able to achieve Magnet status for the Via Christi hospitals in Wichita.

In conclusion, I would hope that the culture at Via Christi changes for the better, since I have many friends that all three campuses in Wichita. However, I hold out little hope of that actually happening.
