Pros

- great focus on science, usually PIs are very passionate about their work

Cons

- the school in general does not focus on science heavily, therefore funding is always up in the air unless your PI is a big name

I have been working at Virginia Tech

    Pros

From an academic standpoint, it's such a great institution!

    Cons

There is relatively little to do but study at any given time of the year, unless you're outdoorsy.

  2. Great experience. Grad school has treated me well.

    Pros

My experience as a graduate research assistant for one of the university's engineering departments has been excellent. Also, the area is fantastic--a couple years ago, Business week ranked Blacksburg as the best town in which to raise a family. The culture is great, there are coffee shops everywhere, live music at most places, and the natural surroundings are beautiful.

    Cons

The university, as with most publicly funded organizations, often allocates funds inefficiently. Also, Blacksburg does get quite cold and often wet in late winter.
