Current Employee - Senior Operational Support Engineer
Current Employee - Senior Operational Support Engineer

I have been working at Vistaprint full-time (more than a year)

Pros

Very talented people among the different technology departments, with an on-boarding very well designed to help you land on the job in a smooth way and very competitive perks

Cons

The work in support roles is not well balanced when compared with other tech positions so you'll need to set your own limits in order not to work many more hours than rest of your colleagues

I have been working at Vistaprint full-time

    Pros

    * It's a good environment to learn the basics of most jobs like online and offline marketing, software development, analytics, design, and research. You have the opportunity to work with a lot of experienced people who very talented. If you're just coming out of university you'll learn more in 3 months than you would in 3 years at another company.

    * Vistaprint offers a competitive salary for most job functions compared to other Barcelona companies and the benefits are very good (free coffee, juice and fizzy drinks, cocktail party each week, lunch allowance, transportation supplement, free bicycle parking, early exit on fridays). The only miss here is that most Spanish companies offer reduced hours on Friday year-round while Vistaprint only does it on Fridays in the summer.

    * Intelligent, well mannered, and funny co-workers; almost everyone is nice to work with. Conversations are always respectful and even though people have varying viewpoints it's easy to get to consensus.

    * The international environment is very stimulating and getting to know people with different backgrounds adds something special to coming to work every day. This is *not* a spanish company, but rather a bubble in Barcelona. Be European 9-5 and Catalan and Spanish 5-9

    * Vistaprint is a stable company that won't close soon. Management is very concerned about the bottom line which limits the risk that other companies might have in staying in business.

    * The office is at a quiet location near the beach, with people going to run or swim during the day and after work. Metro, bus and bicycle connectivity are very good so it's easy to get to.

    Cons

    * Organizational changes come frequently (every 6 months, sometimes faster). These changes are typically right-angle shifts which break up teams, and disrupt careers harming people's chances for growth and advancement. The changes are needed to keep up with the company's evolving strategy however the desire of employees are typically secondary.

    * The frequent strategy changes harm new employees who may have been hired for a role that has changed significantly or no longer exists. Prospective employees should keep in touch with their new manager before joining to confirm that the role and expectations have not changed between their acceptance and start dates.

    * The work environment is needlessly competitive. Roles are often not clearly defined which causes unnecessary friction and duplication of effort between team members and across locations.

    * Promotions are only earned once an employee behaves as though they're at the next level. The rationale behind this is that Vistaprint will never promote someone who is not ready. The negative effect of this is that people often engage in work that doesn't contribute to the company strategy/bottom line. In groups where there are many people at the same level there is tension between them as they all simultaneously try to "be the boss".

    * The hierarchical US (home office) led structure creates mistrust across locations, wasted time making decisions, and wasted work due to misalignment between regions and departments. The Barcelona office has talented employees but little credibility.

    * A large amount of people's time in every department is spent executing process to support the hierarchy rather than generate value. This time could exceed the time spent doing actual work.

    * A large number of talented people are leaving the office and there are "leaving drinks" every month. Morale in the office is correspondingly numb with people thinking of Vistaprint as a short term stop rather than a good place to have a career.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    * A completely US led organization in a global company not the answer. Consolidate authority where it can make the greatest impact. Balance holding these people accountable with giving them time to succeed.

    * Stability in organizational structure is key to winning back employee confidence in decisions being made at the top.

    * The company has three masters: its customers, its employees, and its shareholders. The third currently drives all decisions, but if we serve the first two, the third will be happier in the long term.
