Pros

Compensation is best upon hiring, after that the raises are 2% or less no matter how good the performance may be. the production workforce generally tries to work hard while having to adjust to regular engineering staff changes. The technology is fascinating and one may gain from the experience.

Cons

Go Go Go is the president's personal mantra which has an obvious conflict with "getting the job done right the first time" and ultimately weaving any Quality agenda into the organization. The message is hurry hurry hurry while realizing the consequence of failure time after time. The new product development process hasn't matured and time to market extremely slow. Acquisitions have spread support responsibility very thin. The QA organization and structure is nowhere near the size it should be for a major class III device manufacturer and often the nearest staff engineer is 400 miles away. The president's quarterly all-hands address is a one man, one way communication that faltered in hiding the Costa Rica off-shore manufacturing effort from the workforce. The president's annually revised company slogans reflect a sort of corporate marketing re-inventing cheer that fail miserably to inspire and invigorate. Engineering turnover is regular and easily observed. Some experience and expertise may be gained but professional careers are generally short lived here.

    Pros

Some good people, helping patients, generally understanding of project delays / screw ups. Some departments are better than others. Salary is decent for Sacramento area.

    Cons

Transfer of manufacturing to Costa Rica means limited future opportunity for most operations employees at the site.

QA is more difficult to work with than similar sized medical device companies, lots of unwritten rules and processes which are more complicated than they need to be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Investing the millions spent on Costa Rica facility and process improvements before moving (to Costa Rica) into Rancho Cordova could have yielded similar profit if given the chance.

Great co-workers, unrealistic upper management, middle management layer trapped in the middle.

    Pros

High level of technical expertise with peers. Good social interaction.

    Cons

Upper management believes that projects are not delivered as quickly as they could be, due to the incompetence of the technical people. Unrealistic schedule expectations are not considered to be the issue. IWhile salary rates are presented as "competitive", the fact remains that those who leave for greener pastures will often make far more than their rate at Volcano.
