I worked at Volvo Trucks

Pros

Great place if you are a technically minded person. Challenges abound so you most likely will not get bored here. Use some of the newest engineering design and testing technologies.

Cons

Sometimes it's hard to tell where the company is headed, especially in these times. The truck market is very cyclical, so you can expect business to be up and down.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage the higher engineers to take the time and train/assist more junior engineers. Offer better training or else you will have retiring engineers who haven't bothered to train the younger ones.

Volvo Trucks - Great Concept, Disappointing Execution

    I worked at Volvo Trucks

    Pros

The Volvo Way is a proud concept which, when executed properly, would make Volvo a top company to work for. The benefits package is excellent, though impacted by recent economics. Expatriate opportunities exist for those in lower management and below. The complexity and visibility of the products makes the work very interesting.

    Cons

Volvo top management has a very narrow world view focused on Sweden. Ideas inconsistent with this world view are actively discouraged even when consistent with regional market requirements. As a result, many strategic opportunities are missed and employees with broader world views and creative approaches find the environment frustrating. Volvo has actively developed a bureaucracy which makes rapid action and decision making difficult.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Volvo provides good benefits and could be an exceptional work place if the executive management team would life up to "The Volvo Way" and support creative approaches to business strategy -- particularly when dealing with international markets.

I have been working at Volvo Trucks

    Pros

Offers a opportuntiy to work with diverse work force and interacting with employees in different countries. Volvo also offers a opportunity to work as a expatriate for someone who might be interested in exploring different countries and cultures. The work pressure is not too high and people are really nice to work with.

    Cons

No scope of moving up the corporate ladder. Most of the jobs are reserved for the Swedes and there is only upto certain level you can/are allowed to progress. The tuition re-imbursement sucks even though other benefits are not too bad to complain about. Don't expect big bonuses or pay raises unless you are in the upper management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to let people grow and make them passionate about working for the company.
