Pros

Don't have to be terribly smart to stay employed.
Some co-workers do actually care about you.
Used to be a very secure and stable company.

Cons

Inefficient practices and non-profit producing departments kept around due to personal loyalties and not sound business decisions.
Severely incompetent people in positions of authority and responsible for strategic planning.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have more loyalty to your employees.

Not What It Used To Be

    Pros

Vulcan has an above average benefits package, and the company is stable with few layoffs. They have made strides in making the workplace more fair towards women and minorities. They match charitable contributions, and the rank-and-file employees are very loyal and dedicated to the company, particularly the ones that have been there for many years.

    Cons

Benefits are being quickly changed to make them just average, rather than above average. HR seems to spend a lot of time finding ways to keep salaries down. If a female employee doesn't play by the right 'Southern Belle' rules, she may as well leave, because there will be no promotions or decent raises. Most importantly, bad middle managers are protected at the expense of their direct reports. Upper management seems to be more concerned with how things look, than how they actually are.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When you are told that a manager is creating a hostile work environment, don't just do the legally necessary thing - do the RIGHT thing.

    Pros

Convenient, stable employer who has adapted well to the downturn in the economy.

    Cons

Employees have largely been asked to carry the burden of the downturn with additional responsibilities, people leaving are not replaced and salaries are flat.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make a better effort to reward and compensate your best employees.
