Pros

Grainger is a great company to work for, you will have alot of freedom and you will also be able to obtain some great benefits.

While the company is great, you will be required to put in alot of time into this position, if you are a student it will be very hard to complete school.

They do not promote based on competence or talent, but by "who you know."

Former Employee - Sales Support Department in Northbrook, IL

    I worked at W.W. Grainger

    Pros

Benefits are outstanding. Some departments do a great job of developing their people, evaluating talent, and promoting accordingly. The trick is to be in one of those departments.

    Cons

One's experience at Grainger is completely dependant on 2 things: what department one happens to be in; and how connected one is to management. There are pools of people that all came from several other companies and they tend to isolate positive opportunities amongst themselves. There is a hypocrisy when management preaches continuous improvement but rejects suggested changes for the better in favor of status quo.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please re-evaluate the "management" in the Sales Support Department. Also, take a look at HR and how they fail to assist employees in career development. Don't over play the diversity concept at the expense of what would be best for the company.

I have been working at W.W. Grainger

    Pros

Competitive base pay within the industry. Profit sharing plan.

    Cons

Little room for advancement unless willing to move to corporate in Lake Forrest IL.
    Pay advancement is minimal.
Advancement is based on who you know rather than performance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the branch employees more instead of only focusing on reports and numbers.
