I have been working at W.W. Grainger full-time (more than a year)

Pros

Great benefits and flexibility. Depending on where you are there are some really good people to work with. There are some very good managers that listen to you and offer help while others do not want to deal with those that have performance issues that should be dealt with.

Cons

Advancing within the company is difficult at best unless you are willing to relocate. Communication within the mass departments within the company needs to be improved so everyone knows what is going on and who actually has the authority to make the decisions and be willing to put it on paper. Management needs to be held to the same standards as the direct reports and need to be reprimanded when they don't.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do what you say you are going to do and be consistent. It is great that managers continue to move around within the companyso frequently but no one stays in their current role long enough to care what is truly going on right in front of them. Hire and promote from within instead of bringing people in who have no knowledge of the company or the industry we support. And lastly, listen to your customers, they are the ones who truly write your paycheck. They do matter.

Grainger is a great company to work for, you will have alot of freedom and you will also be able to obtain some great benefits.

    Cons

While the company is great, you will be required to put in alot of time into this position, if you are a student it will be very hard to complete school.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

have a better understanding of the position and how to train your employees . specially with the time management. Thank you

They do not promote based on competence or talent, but by "who you know."

    I worked at W.W. Grainger

    Pros

Benefits are outstanding. Some departments do a great job of developing their people, evaluating talent, and promoting accordingly. The trick is to be in one of those departments.

    Cons

One's experience at Grainger is completely dependant on 2 things: what department one happens to be in; and how connected one is to management. There are pools of people that all came from several other companies and they tend to isolate positive opportunities amongst themselves. There is a hypocrisy when management preaches continuous improvement but rejects suggested changes for the better in favor of status quo.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please re-evaluate the "management" in the Sales Support Department. Also, take a look at HR and how they fail to assist employees in career development. Don't over play the diversity concept at the expense of what would be best for the company.
