Used to be a great place to work. Growth has overshadowed their former emphasis on employee satisfaction.

I have been working at W.W. Grainger full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Good benefits, unique profit sharing plan.

Cons

"Virtualization" means that there is little accountability from management. Nobody in management seems to accept responsibility for anything, its always someone else's job or "out of scope"

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your managers back to managing people, not so busy with their side projects that review time becomes more of an exercise in who can sling the most BS effectively because the CSM has no idea what is going on with the team.

    Pros

Strong financials, leader in the industry and well respected organization with good benefits and profit sharing plan.

    Cons

Disconnection between corporate and sales organizations leads to poor decisions made regarding account potential, coverage, etc. Luck of the draw regarding territory leads to even the best sales people having difficulty in consistent success.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bridge the gap between sales and corporate

I have been working at W.W. Grainger full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great benefits and flexibility. Depending on where you are there are some really good people to work with. There are some very good managers that listen to you and offer help while others do not want to deal with those that have performance issues that should be dealt with.

    Cons

Advancing within the company is difficult at best unless you are willing to relocate. Communication within the mass departments within the company needs to be improved so everyone knows what is going on and who actually has the authority to make the decisions and be willing to put it on paper. Management needs to be held to the same standards as the direct reports and need to be reprimanded when they don't.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do what you say you are going to do and be consistent. It is great that managers continue to move around within the companyso frequently but no one stays in their current role long enough to care what is truly going on right in front of them. Hire and promote from within instead of bringing people in who have no knowledge of the company or the industry we support. And lastly, listen to your customers, they are the ones who truly write your paycheck. They do matter.
