I have been working at W.W. Grainger full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Good product breadth and depth, good service to customers, great next day availability, changing to keep up with the market.

Cons

Poor communication with change causing uncertainty in the sales force. Managers not able to performance manage without worry of retaliation from direct reports. Too many managers "chose to leave the company" after performance managing.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust your sales managers and let them lead. Stand by them when they performance manage and make decisions. By not doing so, you're creating a culture of allowing mediocre sellers and sales leaders unable to do anything about it.

    Pros

    Great HQ with nice Cafe in Lake Forest
    Work from home on Fridays

    Cons

    Treats Contractors like some 2nd class citizens. It's slightly common in corporate world but it goes an extra mile here...

    No room for new ideas

    Squeezing 40-50 people in one room in the name of AGILE

    Far behind in IT methodologies and lack of knowledge in what is currently new in the market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get better with treating employees/contractors and they would in turn do better things for company instead of looking for opportunities for jumping out of company.

    Pros

    Great pay. Strong benefits. Great people to work with. You receive some of the best sales training available from both internal and external resources that are specific to the MRO world, but also concepts that help you build your future for other potential opportunities outside of sales. Great opportunities for advancement for top producing candidates if you are willing to relocate.

    Cons

    No movement to improve rural markets. Stuck with more accounts to make goal based on employee return on investment. Cause for burnout with trying to meet required sales plans and goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Adjust goals and sales plans to be SMART, truly SMART for rural employees. Not addressing these issues will not only cause the loss of top talent, but also the loss of revenue and growth for large customers in rural areas.
