I worked at Waffle House full-time (less than an year)

Pros

-Ample advancement opportunity if you can endure.
-Decent benefits for the industry. Including health and life insurance. They also give you private stock in the company
-Stable, conservative company that will always be around. You will always have a job, and they are always hiring.

Cons

-Forget your life, just completely forget about it. 70-80 hours weeks are the norm. Weekends are mandatory. You work holidays. You will live, breathe, sleep, and eat Waffle House.
-You may think that 30000-40000 plus performance based commission sounds great, but when you actually break it down into an hourly rate, you are unlikely to surpass $11/hr. Many of the waitresses earn more than the Unit Manager, based on the hourly rate, when tips are factored in. And they don't deal with a fraction of the responsibilities and stress that you will deal with.
-You will be constantly stressed dealing with employees, and pressure from your division manager. Upper management is demanding. The company is archaic, and although sitting on a billion dollars in cash, is incredibly cheap and unwilling to update their stone age computers and cash registers.
-The work is incredibly hard. They try to break you from the get-go. During the first week, they employ every tactic they can to dehumanize you and access whether or not you can be conditioned to tolerate the position as long as possible until the next crop comes in. They had me digging up hundreds of pounds of dirt and weeds with a shovel on an old curb dangerously close to the highway. Cars were speeding by mere feet from where I was working. It certainly sent red flags when regular employees were upset about how they saw unit managers treated.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

-You need to change the entire system. It's nearly impossible for one sole manager to run a 24/7 365 store alone without burning out. Creating an assistant store manager position would be a start.
- Stop hoarding the billion dollar cash surplus and use it to make much needed renovations and improvements to your stores. Invest in a better computer system and modern registers. These investments will pay off in the long run.
-Remember that people are people. They are not machines. You need to focus on reshaping your company policy to allow for a reasonable work/life balance.

    Pros

    Good customers. Pay bonus good if ambitious. Streamline and overall guidelines. Often made more than pay grade above me.

    Cons

    Long hours. Rampant theft and drug usage from management to employees.Constant, childish drama. Excessive gossiping and cell phone usage.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Upper management needs to get their heads in the game. Focus on the immediate business at hand and behave professionally; do not interrupt with a personal vendetta. Entering stores at peak business hours, just calmly jump in and help where you see weaknesses. Do not come in shouting at your workers or trying to rudely 'correct' them when they're busy taking care of customers....deal with those issues at the right times. Stop rehiring the nonproductive ones who steal, come in doped up, and spend their time on the cell phone. Stop wasting dollars trying to save pennies. Don't let managers hand out keys to office and commissary like candy. When investigating incidents and write-ups do so professionally and do not tolerate write-ups either forged by managers, based upon hearsay and do not engage in romance w/employees at work. Don't dabble or hesitate when it comes to firing nonproductive, unruly employees. Stay with the experienced and positive honest ones who are not there to play games and have a loyal customer base. Don't let employees smoke up the front door. And do not let your grill operators wait on tables and cook at same time. Reimplement the Master Grill operator program as incentive to cooks.And stop encouraging employees to work off the clock. Consider experience when hiring and do not move salespeople and grill operators around to boost sales at lower productive stores..

    Pros

    Pay is very good, you are generally paid for the amount of work you put in at each level of management

    Cons

    24 hour operation is very demanding on your time, you are at the mercy of the peopele you manage and many of them are inherited from previous management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Set the standards higher for management reqruitment and discipline managers for non-performance
