Walgreens Employee Review
Walgreens – “Internship with walgreens”
0 of 1 people found this helpfulPros
The pay. While still in college, I was able to do a summer internship as a retail management store intern. I was making 14/hour, which is pretty good. I definitely had to do a lot of work, hard work, but the pay made it bearable.
Also, the experience. Very few places are willing to give you a CHANCE at working at a manager position, with no experience. Walgreens did that and I appreciate it.
Cons
The biggest downside was the level of work. I was worked so hard and there is really no way to finish all the work given in a 40 hour work week. Thus working overtime. BUT, the company is so anti-overtime, I actually had to work a lot of "off the clock hours." I'm a hard worker, but it really wore me out.
Also, as for the general health of the company, I don't think, compared to CVS, it is a very healthy company. But they seem to take care of their people better than CVS. Only time will tell if they survive the level of competition.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more open to allowing employees overtime, or be willing to hire more. It's a very tricky balance between your cost and revenue, but being overworked is never a good thing. I was basically an assistant manager for my internship, and as an assistant, I believe they should be on a salary basis, or we should have a little more leniency in allowing us to work overtime.

As for work/life balance, it won't be much different from any other 40 hour job you will work. Work/life balance gets thrown out of whack as an EXA (position below the store manager), but as an intern/asst manager, it's not bad.

As for work/life balance, you get it as an assistant manager or a store manager. EXAs have no work/life balance. Don't expect one. On the other hand, EXAs have decent pay (50kish per year). As an assistant, you'll have a decent work life balance, and can expect between 15-17/hr, with 40 hour work weeks. As an EXA, you are salary based, and can expect 50-60 hour work weeks.
There is 1 EXA per walgreens. There are 1-3 assistant managers, depending on how busy the store is (busy 24 hour stores typically have 2-3; one in my district was so busy they actually had 4).
As for my career, yes. Walgreens was a great experience; I certainly didn't realize all the work that goes into running a typical retail store, and that gave me an amazing insight into what goes on. However, while I truly appreciate the experience, I wanted to look at other opportunities. My girlfriend still work for Walgreens, and has worked for them for 6 years, so I still hear a lot about the company. But now that I'm going Army Officer, I'm very proud of what I'm doing.
Walgreens is a great company; just don't expect to make store manager anytime soon. Store managers have it pretty good. They run their stores with a good deal of freedom, and get paid very well (70-110k+). But to get there, you have to be an EXA for 1-10 years. And as an EXA, it is harsh. Hope this helps!
