Current Employee - Sales Associate in Blue Springs, MO

I have been working at Walmart part-time (more than a year)

Pros

No shift is ever the same. Work with awesome people who make the shift go by faster. Opportunities to do different things like run a cash register, help answer the store phone, stock, zone, and bin.

Cons

Must be flexible with availability in order to get as many hours as possible. Salary is not so great. Not many opportunities for full-time work. It can be stressful working with the public day in and day out. It can get crazy when you are needed in two different places at once.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the associates! Without associates, Walmart would be nothing. The associates are the frontline people. The associates know what is going on within the stores. Not a great deal of effective communication between Home Office and the stores.

I worked at Walmart part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Easy, climate controlled, and very easy to get along with supervisors. I have got to say, it made a good first job. The supervisors weren't mean, the conditions were pretty good, and the job wasn't really hard.

    Cons

Schedule flexibility, shipping/receiving, and parking lot duty. Also the few long timers there that definitely seemed pretty determined to have it their way or the highway, even if a higher manager said otherwise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When someone says they aren't available (say, due to class), don't give them the runaround on their schedule.

I worked at Walmart as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Have a few incentives, consistent breaks, some good people to work with, good benefits, help monetarily with college, and pay well compared to similar businesses.

    Cons

No AC in the warehouse, manager tells us that we are the burden of the company, company doesn't account for anything for example (if something falls from the conveyer system way above your head while you are hustling boxes in your truck, it's your fault for not looking thirty feet above you while your loading cartons in the truck and you get written up.) Cannot use your cell phone for any reason at all, and if found out you will immediately be fired no warnings, another thing is that you are forced to listen to horrible music all day long and cannot bring your own music device in.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I would advise putting some railings on the conveyer system to keep cartons from falling off and creating damages and loss of production. Be able to park closer to the different departments so you don't have to walk for 7 minutes just to go to your work station. When you have incentive lunches or safety meals bring them to each department so you don't have to spend at least a third of your lunch time walking. If everyone is so worried about safety then they should be paying more attention to employees and supervise more, only Asset Protection walks around every once and awhile to harass employees about minor details.
