I have been working at Walmart full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very broad range of opportunities, growth linked to performance and capability to do more. Whilst many of the 2.3m people work in stores and do the important work to serve 200m customers each week, there are jobs from meteorologist to pilot that support the business to serve the customer.

    Cons

It is a big company and you can easily be just 1 of many, although it still does not feel as big as some of the large firms I have worked at previously. Can be very short term focussed and go ditch to ditch on strategy.

    Advice to Management

Invest more in thinking about how we will get to a future state.

  2. Entered as a manager and received two promotions to director in two years

    Pros

There are a lot of ebbs and flows within Walmart. I was lucky enough to land in a area where there was a lot of flow and opportunity to impact the business. I see other areas where I would not have had the opportunities.

    Cons

The focus on cost containment can create a culture shock for employees and their families. I came from a Fortune 100 company. My wife was shocked at the lack of company activities which involve the families of employees. It's been a little disappointing for her.

    Advice to Management

Loosen the purse strings when it comes to providing benefits to corporate employees.
