I have been working at Walmart full-time (more than 8 years)

Pros

Stability of business, in right stores potential to make enormous impact. Has made recent inroads to try and guarantee more hours to permanent associates

Cons

Frequent shifts in direction that are as much the result of cost savings as being adaptable. Poor compensation in metro areas results in high turnover.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treating associates right has to be about more than lip service.

I worked at Walmart full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Many positions do not require a college degree; there many opportunities for advancement within the company within a year; the company provides training and different classes for skills improvement; excellent benefits, 401k plan, stock purchase plan, etc. Coworkers and managers are friendly and willing to help you. The company allows flexible work schedule.

    Cons

You must be willing to move to Bentonville, AR area to work at their headquarters. The company pays low salaries and do not expect big annual raises in salary. You’ll be expected to participate in some silly team activities and do Wal-Mart cheers, etc. Sometimes it gets loud since many people work there, each in its own cubical. The company’s bureaucracy makes it difficult to negotiate for any good raises or change the way they do some things.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay more competitive wages to your employees. Offer better and affordable healthcare plans. Offer more classes and opportunities for learning.
