Current Employee - Senior Manager, Software Dev  in  Brisbane, CA
Current Employee - Senior Manager, Software Dev in Brisbane, CA

Pros

Great place for junior engineers, plenty of opportunities and larger than life projects.

Cons

No innovation, very stiffling environment. COE (Correction Of Error) is really CYA. If you think different and don't like to settle for the staus quo, avoid at all cost. The most miserable years of my life.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop using the Walmart Core Values as a way to better chastise dissent and caste blame.

Very centralized workspace with almost all direction coming from headquarters in Arkansas.

Current Employee - Associate Manager in San Bruno, CA

    Pros

    * Location is great with dedicated parking garage & security onsite.
    * Opportunities to work in other departments
    * Plenty of potential in the Ecommerce space considering they are the largest retailer in the World

    Cons

    * Getting internal projects in the books is next to impossible especially if it requires engineer hours
    * Gaps in supervision & direction are very evident when senior people leave
    * You need to fight for visibility as management has deemed certain departments more important than others

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    * Decentralize the supervision
    * Offer a flatter working environment
    * Lessen bureaucracy & give the power back to employees to make decisions

Current Employee - Product Manager in San Bruno, CA

    Pros

    High profile brand name
Work life balance is respected most times
You can seriously coast if you want to here

    Cons

Inexperienced but entrenched or incompetent leadership that have obviously played the political game so well to be repeatedly promoted way beyond their skill level
Millions of dollars thrown at contractors rather than building institutional knowledge and loyalty through investment in employees and compensation
    Below market compensation
    Overwhelming processes for everything
Culture of politics and talking a good game rather than execution and delivery
    Revolving door of leadership

Overall, a complete lack of a cohesive strategy across the company and the leadership changes result in constant changes in direction -- the processes are too rigid to support this and the net effect is terrible employee morale.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop planning and re-organizing all the time. Focus on execution. Decide on 1 strategy and just stick to it. It can be the world's worst strategy ever but seriously, just stick to it or risk absurdly high turnover rates.

Re-evaluate your senior management team, especially those who have been at the company for a long time--they are failing you.
