Current Employee - Marketing and Public Relations in Burbank, CA

I have been working at Warner Bros. full-time (more than 8 years)

Pros

Let's face it, it's fun to work for a movie studio, many outstanding perks. WB also offers competitive pay, benefits, and generous paid time off.

Cons

Leadership, or lack thereof. Management here is some of the worst I have ever seen. They don't develop their staff, HR is a joke, there's no focus on employee relations, managers yell/curse at employees, you're expected to work ridiculous hours and on your vacation, very unprofessional, tons of favoritism, I have had zero performance reviews during my tenure, there are way too many VPs and above, and too many people getting promoted when they should not. You can be a terrible manager and still get promoted, we see it all the time.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Thin out your VP levels, especially the old timers, they are so lazy and ineffective. Put a formal career development process in place. Hold managers accountable for developing their staff. Actually enforce annual performance appraisals (just because a score is submitted doesn't mean a conversation ever happened).

I have been working at Warner Bros. full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

It's Warner Bros. Better than average pay. Flexible schedule. Great benefits.

    Cons

Lately they hire completely unqualified people from totally different industries and make kids right out of college senior manager or VP. Upper management literally has no idea what their division does, or what the day to day operations are. Extremely low employee satisfaction /morale. Positions are always filled by outside hire, zero promotion from below Director level. Tendency to implement every new management fad, regardless if it fits the business model, decreases efficiency and productivity and negatively impacts clients/revenue. Several rounds of layoffs have left divisions too lean, everyone does the work of four people. Up to ten hours of overtime a week. Red state / blue state management vs hourly dynamic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pizza Hut used to make new franchise owners spend two weeks doing every job in the business before they could run one. Upper management needs to have a real understanding of the day to day of their division. Hire the person who can do the job (experience/background), not the guy right out of college or the guy who used to grow flowers for florists. Stop using recruiters and consultants. Recruiters don't know what a qualified applicant is and consultants aren't there to solve your problem they are there to sell you their services in perpetuity. If it isn't broken, don't fix it - stop implementing every new fad from every other business, and if you do, listen to your employees when they tell you the changes aren't working.
