Pros

Good benefits. There is a culture of continuous improvement although its not working as well as it could.

Cons

Lots of processes and procedures make it hard to get things done.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

People use many of the in place processes as an excuse for why something wasn't accomplished or as a way to stop people in their tracks from accomplishing things. Really take a look at that across the company and remove some of the layers of waste. A lot of managers for a small company and many of them want to get in the way to justify their existence.

    Pros

Amazing co-workers - kind, smart, funny.

    Cons

Management is clueless about what it takes to do our jobs and will overspend by $100,000s just to prove a point.

I worked at Washington Dental Service full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

-The vast majority of employees are great people who really care about the mission and about each other.
-There are many opportunities to get involved in projects outside of the scope of your position; which allows for additional growth
-Benefits are VERY rich, great medical, dental (duh), and decent optical. 401k is matched dollar for dollar up to the first 8% - which is excellent! Nice vacation time, floating holidays, sick time, etc.
-Work/life balance is very good. The office pretty much becomes a ghost town by 5pm each day.

    Cons

-Communication is sorely lacking. Often a decision is made in a room with a few people and then implemented without considering it trickle-down effect. In many cases, the change is not communicated to all stakeholders, and employees end up with varying degrees of information. The front-line employees always seem to be the last people to know, and often don't realize there has been a change until someone from outside of the company calls to complain about it.
-People are promoted because they have been there the longest, not necessarily because they are the best candidate. While I never felt it first-hand, there was a lot of favoritism evident, which is discouraging to those who are not a part of the "in" crowd.
-Bonus structure is set up so that those who make the most in salary are eligible for the most in bonus %. Those at the bottom of the totem pole are eligible for the least amount in bonus %.
-There are many new initiatives that are the flavor of they day... here today and gone tomorrow. It is hard to get excited about new programs when experience has shown that they will probably fade and die. Nothing really seems to change.
-Senior leadership often considers themselves exempt from participating in "all-employee" initiatives. This is not leading by example.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Thank you for the growth opportunities being at WDS afforded me. Try to figure out a way to find out who your worker bees really feel, and care about their feelings. There is a lot of fear of retribution for those who would like to speak out but are afraid.
