I have been working at Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission as an intern for less than a year

Pros

Pleasant environment depending on the floor your working on.
Some departments are much more friendly than others.

Cons

Favoritism is at an all time high and HR Department does this the most.
Family members move up very quickly.
Unless you are related to someone or have a very close relationship with a current employee it may not be as easy to obtain employment at this agency.
HR is very dysfunctional; unorganized; slow to complete hiring process
Many unqualified applicants hired
When there's issues with employees or departments, EVERYONE knows.

I have been working at Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Tactical level employees working for the company are very nice and most work hard to ensure the success for the company.

    Cons

Leadership team is basically outsourced because they all work on contract basis and as such have no vested interest in the success of the employees.

HR Department is either useless or powerless. Pretty much turn the other cheek on serious HR violations caused by abuse of power.

There is a large degree of nepotism so you don't know if it's safe to speak with your boss or not because they could very well be related to the person you have a complaint about.

Technology is also about 20 years behind and they are very process poor.

Retirement announcements roll in like daily news. There are at least 2-3 a week. It's pretty insane - almost like people are running from the place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize that the internal problems will eventually reach a boiling point that will become public and embarrassing as lawsuits continue to roll in. HR needs to clean up their act and hold leadership accountable for employee abuse and violation of policy conduct. In addition, employee morale and working conditions created for them should be a measure of performance for leadership.

Parts of the organization have real problems - the HR department is notoriously bad.

I worked at Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission

    Pros

Many of the long term employees are dedicated and decent people. There are opportunities to help other employees and gain a broader perspective.

    Cons

Silo communication, management contempt for employees. Some parts of the organization (such as Engineering, HR, Acquisition, MBE) are very "can't do" places.
