Former Employee - Post Doctoral Research Associate in Saint Louis, MO

I worked at Washington University in St. Louis full-time (more than a year)

Pros

Access to and mentoring from faculty with high and consistent levels of federal funding.
Extensive academic resources for research and grant writing
Support staff are professional and willing to work through issues that arise
Excellent facilities
Superior Career Center staff for post-docs
Excellent health benefits

Cons

Inconsistent approaches to mentoring - not all post docs get the same level of mentoring or faculty investment
Faculty not able to assist pragmatically with job search
Poor and inconsistent links to valuable university resources
Very low pay
Expectation is that you will put career first, family and personal life on hold for duration of post doc.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure that post docs are aware of all university resources. During the job search, I was not encouraged or informed of the Career Center, which proved to be an invaluable resource that ultimately contributed to my employment after the post doc.

I worked at Washington University in St. Louis full-time

    Pros

Washington University offers an excellent benefit package and makes that information available to all current or potential employees.

    -Medical, Vision, Long Term Disability
-22 Vacation Days, 12 Sick Days Annually

    Cons

work-life balance was not near ideal. In my particular office the culture was your work is your life, no exceptions. This is not the case in all departments and I would still recommend this employer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In my particular department work-life balance should have been considered and respected more as having balance would not affect an employees performance or productivity.
