A well-respected organization that does good work. Excellent benefits. Low key academic environment. Interesting projects to work on. Stable - so long as the boss's grants keep coming.

    Pros

It was a positive educational experience for me. I had the opportunity to not only learn many scientific research techniques, but also interact with many leading professionals in the industry. It was very flexible to balance work and personal life.

    Cons

Sometimes, the bench research work can get quite tedious. There is not much room for advancement unless you have an additional degree.

    Advice to Management

It would be a good idea to have more recreational activities planned for the staff. That way, more relaxation and team bonding can be accomplished.

  2. Upper echelons know what they're doing, but academics are not always the best at managing their departments.

    Pros

Many professors are good to work for and undergraduates are often bright and interested students. Good research environment, especially at the Medical School. Good planning to accommodate cross-disciplinary research and emerging fields of science. A lot of capital investment as of late, especially in scientific research labs. Free mass-transit passes for students, staff and faculty, reasonable benefits for graduate researchers. Located in a very family-friendly city with the campus in close proximity to a number of free cultural / recreational opportunities such as the Zoo, Art Museum, History Museum and Science Center. Many collaborations and tie-ins with other local universities and local industry. Paid subscription / access to a a large number of scientific journals.

    Cons

Professors in groups can often be short-sighted and slow to act, especially in certain departments.

    Advice to Management

With poor foresight, my department allowed a few very good researchers to leave, presumably not addressing their compensation or organizational concerns. Research output and ranking for my depratment has been dropping of late. Keep promising more young PIs and shell out a little more to keep established, high-output PIs as they attract better graduate researchers.
