Weather Channel – “Was a great place to work, but changes underway”

Pros

I really liked working at The Weather Channel because of the people. I met some of my best friends there over the decade I was there. It made coming to work enjoyable. I also had many opportunities for learning and advancement, including new jobs in other departments and on-the-job training (classes, etc.). I have found my experiences there to be quite helpful when looking for 'selling points' in my search for a new job. While there were layoffs in '08, they took good care of the people they let go.

Cons

Priorities were not always in the right place. It is a weather company, but it's presence in the weather enterprise was often extremely minimal. This makes it hard for meteorological employees to stay in touch with the industry, and did not make TWC look like a team player within the industry. Also, communication within the company needed vast improvements. It never seemed to get better, even though this was a consistent request on company-wide surveys over many years. It sounds like the work environment has degraded considerably in the past year, although I don't know if that is more because of the economy or the new NBC owntership (they lost 10% of the company to layoffs in '08, leaving a lot of work to be done by fewer people).

Advice to Senior Management

Improve communication throughout the company.
