Pros

Access to many opportunities, great projects, and some of the best people in the business.

Cons

Relatively large company so sometimes your voice isn't heard as quickly as you may wish. However, once your voice is heard, typically positive results are achieved, as everyone up the ladder wants the company to succeed.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you're doing, and look forward to continued success at this great company.

    I worked at Webcor Builders

    Pros

Like at any job, your experience is highly dependent on the project and team you are placed on. That being said, I was on a team with irreparably damaged relationships, and I in turn had an experience that was less than stellar at the company. However, I did see that throughout the company, there were many type-a, very focused and hard-working individuals who were rewarded for their hardwork and dedication to the company.

    Cons

As others have said, there was also quite a lot of favoritism within the company. Many are promoted due to their personalities and their politicing, rather than for their skill and knowledge. This leads to disjointedness in management quality of projects.

I have been working at Webcor Builders

    Pros

The recession forced the company to downsize, but the resulting and current roster is a true “A-team” of talented employees, all well deserving of their positions.

Progressive, innovative, and forward thinking - the CEO is very in tune with the latest construction industry trends. Webcor is always looking for ways to build smarter and faster while maintaining their outstanding quality and safety record. They embrace computer technology and building information modeling (BIM) which gives them a major edge on the competing “old school” contractors.

Good work life balance (at least by construction industry standards). There are a number of employees who participate in the 12+ hours a day, 6 days a week behavior, but they are few and far between. Most employees appear to be happy, have healthy marriages, and maintain quality lives/interests outside of the company. A potential employee with a family who is looking for a challenging and meaningful career, but also interested in maintaining the quality of his life won’t find a better company.

    Cons

It seems that most employees, regardless of competency never truly advance out of the worker bee ranks. Competition for the Director (the head-honcho on a Webcor job) and above positions is fierce and you have to be a serious prodigy with a major Type-A corporate minded personality to become one. There are many talented level-headed employees in this company who would be operating at much higher positions in other smaller companies where there is less competition and levels of bureaucracy. *People choose certain working environments for their own reasons – and the above “con” will not be an issue if you are able to peace with it. It’s a common large company dynamic and is probably the same at any other company of this size.

Easy to get pigeon holed into doing one single task or managing one single aspect of a large job for a long period of time.

Atmosphere at times is rather stuffy, sterile and seems to lack company pride and spirit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep it up! This is a great company and I will recommend it to potential job seekers. My only advice would be to watch how top heavy the organization gets and to embrace your lower-tier positions (e.g. PE’s, APM’s, etc.) more. It seems that for every 1 Project Engineer, there are 3-4 Directors and/or Vice Presidents who seem to get all of the attention and credit.
