I worked at Welch Printing full-time (more than 10 years)

They don't blow lots of money on every new technology. They do get the technologies that make sense with their mission, and actually work. Because of this, they have avoided the fate of many commercial printing companies. They also appreciate smart employees, and are pretty straight shooters. Lots of overtime, which is pretty good for printing, nowadays.

Can be penny-wise, pound foolish, however. Will avoid paying for simple upgrades and maintenance work until major systems break or customers threaten to leave. Only way to get a raise is turning in your two-week's notice. If they tell you that you will get a raise after your first evaluation, don't expect to be evaluated. Those only happen after you make a mistake.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Being careful with money is understandable. But pay to maintain what you have to eliminate needless breakdowns and embarrassments. Mechanical maintenance and software upgrades are cheaper than lost customers or reprinted jobs. It also keeps employees from wondering if this is the right career for them.
