I have been working at WellCare

Pros

Salary is above average for local marketplace
Benefit package is competitive with local marketplace
Employs a small number of intelligent, ethical , professional and in general "good" people employees

Cons

The worst work/life balance ever experienced while working over 20 years in IT
Top heavy management - too many levels of unproductive and uncaring management
Extreme managerial/employee favoritism/networking is favored instead of good work efforts and ethics in order to advance
Hostility in the work environment as well as extreme micromanagement & unprofessionalism in many IT areas is tolerated

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Life outside of WellCare does exist!!! Just because upper management may choose to make WellCare their life doesn't mean that employees that choose not to should be frowned upon or de-valued. Need to drive for efficiency within the work day and value people for who they are and what they have to offer and hire managers who recognize good IT work!
Lastly, eliminate the clueless VP's and Directors who do not have healthcare backgrounds, full SDLC IT backgrounds and/or proper people management experience that equate to the various levels of people they manage

    Not much training oppotrunities.
    Too many managers.
    opportunities for growth is limited.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage telecommuting for individuals who are travelling the extra mile to get to work. This will save time and energy. Improve the training opportunities.

    I worked at WellCare

    Pros

It's a health insurance company and one of the few that is still hiring in this recession. If you can get over the long night and week-end shifts, you can get exposure to a pretty good amount of technologies and you can get to know some capable consultants and architects.

    Cons

I worked in the IT group. Lots of work at night (some of it unnecessary and most of it unpaid), incompetent mid level management and lack of vision on projects execution. Lack of respect for people doing the work and a lot of unproductive finger pointing and back-stabbing. Some PMs absolutely terrible, with no understanding of technology at all. Lots of management and staff turn over as well.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start to value and respect people and you will have less turn over.
