    I worked at WellPoint full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Ability to work from home, good education in house, great nurses and leads. Decent pay and benefits. The exception is the health insurance options. The employees should receive the option of the highest and best insurance coverage.

    Cons

    Micro-managed, downsizing, poor rating system on job performance, only beneficial to people who want education and assistance with managing illness. Quantity is more important than quality. It didn't use to be this way. use to be disability friendly but company doesn't work with disabled issues for workers as much as they should. Glorified telemarketers. Poor communication from management. To many non pertinent e-mails.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Let nurses be nurses and decide what is most pertinent for the patient needs and concerns. Not your numbers. Allow employees to take breaks as needed without setting break times. Nurses schedule calls and should be able to schedule breaks and lunch in order to reach the clients.

    Pros

    * Support of work-at-home arrangements
    * Access to online tools and information needed for job

    Cons

    * Mediocre leadership with lackluster vision (middle to upper managment)-- complete lack of critical thinking or analysis skills
    * Many jobs (medical management, IT, QI, etc) outsourced to multiple overseas vendors--many employees with constant fear of losing jobs
    * Frequent (3-4 times/year) reorganizations
    * Constant focus on efficiency over effectiveness (doing things "right" instead of doing the right things)
    * Top-down culture with little to no collaborative input from front-line or middle management employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Take a close look at the gap between executive leadership and front-line associates--senior directors and VPs are very much out of touch with the actual experiences and needs of most associates. The "human element" of management has died a slow and quiet death over past few years, and has been replaced by management automatons who blindly operate at full bureaucratic efficiency--the WellPoint Borg at its best!
