I have been working at WellPoint

Pros

I would have to say that the pay and benefits are excellent. Most of the associates are hard-working and team players.

Managers have the opportunity to be flexible with schedules.

Cons

It's difficult to find jobs in other departments. Once you are in a area, it's hard to learn and develop in other departments to have the ability to move up the ladder.

While vacation and medical benefits are good, it's still difficult for work life balance. Managers work through their lunches, come in early and stay late. What happened to a 40 hour work week.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work together with other departments to have cross-training opportunities with associates. It will improve associate moral and offer many opportunites across the business.

    I worked at WellPoint

    Pros

Excellent benefits and available career paths and promotional opportunities.

    Cons

Continuous downsizing. WellPoint downsizes throughout it's organization each and every year begininng each October. In order to continue to provide double digit earnings for shareholders WellPoint has no qualms in sacrificing employees and positions to accomplish their mission. Inability to accurately project membership retention and earnings projections.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire new local management teams. Look closely at some of your Director positions some of them are skating by as underperformers. They are getting paid high salaries to sit in offices behind glass doors with an insignificant amount of direct reports to retain their jobs. But they are allowed to continue unscathed by downsizing year after year.

    I worked at WellPoint

    Pros

WellPoint has a lot of committed associates in its ranks -- especially in the business units themselves - that want impact customers in a positive way. The innovation that exists at WellPoint is incredible -- and once internal capabilites are developed to aid execution the company will be the leader in more than just pure membership. Benefits and pay are excellent.

    Cons

In corporate areas, poor leadership is pervasive. Recognition is based on making your boss look good to upper management, not helping the business grow. Favortism is rampant in some corporate areas - so much that the entire team is demoralized and operates under the fear that a grudge will be held against them that will impact their continued employment. Associate surveys around these issues are disregarded or able to be 'explained away' by the 'leader' in question.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Review how decisions are made at corporate level; use associate surveys for the intent that they exist -- and not just by having the person in question develop a plan -- get some 3rd party independent feedback from the associates themselves; figure out how to execute by fixing internal capabilities -- there has been too much time lost already in planning but no real action
