Pros

There was a great sense of community and staff worked well together. There were numerous opportunities to help others. There was an opportunity to be creative and connect with others.

Cons

The work environment was inconsistent, with competing priorities from many different factions. It was challenging to keep students motivated in the face of so many hardships and tragedies.

Advice to Management

Communication could be improved on many levels, so that newer employees have a better understanding of how to solve problems within the system. An organizational chart distributed during orientation would go a long way toward this.

Supportive of employees, lots of advancement available if you work hard.

    Cons

Too many priorities, lack of focus.

  2. Substitute teacher - free but rootless

I worked at West Contra Costa USD - Richmond part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexibility to use computer system to choose substitute teacher assignments of the length, subject, age group and location that you are interested in that day or week. Generally relatively hands-off oversight from administrators allows you to experiment with pedagogy.

    Cons

Substitute teaching is bleak unless you can develop relationships with particular teachers and administrators at particular locations. WCCUSD is so huge and its so hard to routinely find work at the same school that this is difficult. Also teachers will just as often as not leave inadequate lesson plans and administrators have little interest in how you are doing in the classroom unless things get out of control, so there is little guidance. You are in many ways a babysitter of large groups of children whose behavior occasionally borders on unruly. Your pay, which is meager but not as bad as it could be, reflects this.

    Advice to Management

Offer major financial incentives for people to sign up to work both half or full time as substitutes devoted to a certain school or schools where they can develop relationships with teachers, administrators and students and thereby be able to perform a better service for all, be more fulfilled themselves and get better compensated.
