I worked at Westat full-time (more than an year)

Pros

good benefits, flexible working hours, some interesting work

Cons

One's experience at Westat depends so much on who is directing the projects that you are working on. As someone fresh out of college, the project director of the main project I was staffed on did not take the time to train me or nurture me as an employee. In addition, there are a lot of strange "research types" at Westat. For the most part, employees are older and have worked at Westat for the majority of their career.

Good benefits, flexibility; but sometimes boring work

I have been working at Westat full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

There are a wide variety of projects and very knowledgeable people. There's a bit of flexibility and good work-life balance. The company offers strong benefits re: professional development, conference attendance, bonuses, stock, etc. The company isn't so much like many other research organizations that lay off staff once projects end--since there's a consistent flow of contracts, there's almost always some project to provide you coverage. However, this is a good place to start before moving on to graduate studies or some other position--Westat is a respected organization.

    Cons

There are definitely high peaks of work around deadlines and proposal writing times, but there are many lulls in work that have made it difficult to remain engaged. Though there are many projects, your ability to work on different projects depends largely on your supervisor.

I have been working at Westat part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Independent, work my own hours, plan my own days. Part time work, 25 hours a week. Paid mileage at $0.55/mi. Weekly paychecks direct deposit. Little supervision. Opportunity for paid travel.

    Cons

No benefits. No bonus. Little room for promotion.
