I worked at Westat full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

The company respects individuals and allows them to grow. The projects are interesting and the company tries really hard to keep persons employed once they are hired. The company will try to find work for you in other areas when your contract ends. The company understands that persons have lives and will make allowances when necessary.

Cons

The promotion policies are somewhat slow. This makes it somewhat difficult to keep younger workers happy and once they have received excellent training from Westat, they often will look for work elsewhere.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company has begun to act like the big company it is, rather than the small company that it was in the beginning. There could be more consistency across groups in policies and procedures

I worked at Westat full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The employees are very friendly and has a great atmosphere from top mangment to lower level. The freedom to work independently without someone looking over your shoulder is also a plus. Well compensated too. Overall great place to work.

    Cons

The downside of it is you only work if there is an assignment that fits you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Need more assignments.

I worked at Westat full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

If you have a good group and a nice PSUP (personnel supervisor), you will have a good time! I started off at this company with a terrible, condescending and seriously old-fashioned PSUP. However, a little less than a year in, that person left the company. After that I had a wonderful PSUP who gave me the perks that others at Westat appreciate. This included being able to work from home at times for personal reasons and having flexibility in my start and end times for work.

    Cons

They say their benefits are great, but you get 5 total holidays and junior level staff is lucky to maybe get 2 weeks of vacation. The upper level staff (particularly, management) do not listen to the ideas of younger staff, who, albeit inexperienced compared to them, have a fresh vision and a much more forward-thinking understanding of the need to adapt to technology.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your junior level staff. Stop letting your junior staff leave Westat so quickly after you invest money training them, and making them excellent at project management and other skills. Think about it! There must be a reason staff are able to leave Westat after only a few years and get a HUGE pay hike! Your management is getting older and you're doing very little to keep junior level staff! You know your overhead is absurd, address this! Let staff work from home and/or share office spaces. The sacrifice will be worth it to them if they are then paid a salary that is actually livable in the DC metro area!!
