I have been working at Western Alliance Bank full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

When I worked for Western Alliance, to was a nice place to work. Nice personable people to work with.

Cons

It's a bank so there is a lot of red tape.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Even though it's a bank which causes much bureaucracy, some formalities are just frustrating and unproductive.

I have been working at Western Alliance Bank full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

If only management would pay attention to what's going on
Maybe it's better outside the IT department

    Cons

Bad IT management starting with CTO
    Incompetence of IT management
CTO playing favorites and OK'ed by her management
Culture of being nasty and cut-throat
No chances at promotions if not part of the Amex clique
Good raises and bonuses only to those in the clique
Failures by CTO and her Amex team are rewarded (lots of examples)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Clean house
    Don't hire Amex people anymore

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
  2.

Avoid IT. Rest of the bank seems relatively happy

I have been working at Western Alliance Bank full-time

    Pros

Bankers, lenders, non-IT people all seem to be happy. It overpays for what you do. The bank itself seems to be well run by intelligent business minds.

    Cons

Extremely top heavy IT organization. They invent VP and SVP figurehead positions for friends of the CTO. You are ineligible for promotion, raises, or an upper management hire unless you worked at Amex or lunch with the CTO. Headcount is manufactured for friends or from some title a "leader" saw mentioned in an IT trends article. Headcount is not created based on organizational need. Be prepared for constant re-orgs based on poor organizational planning and hiring decisions. There is a horrendous work life balance for anyone that is not a figurehead and actually helps the bank do business day-to-day.

CTO does not know who you are or what you do in a very small organization.

Forget best practices and be prepared to spend months debating an obvious decision point and then have a leader choose the worst option for the bank. The technical peers at the datacenter and help desk provider are extremely candid with their disdain for the IT organization which is a pretty good indicator of how bad things are.

Any functional IT skills you may possess will erode and your career will regress.

The turnover rate in IT is astonishing considering how much they overpay for the Phoenix, Arizona market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a new CTO or hire an experienced CIO/CTO above the existing one
