I have been working at Western Governors University

Pros

Management will try anything to get better satisfaction numbers on surveys. One technology or process change after another. Anything except genuine openness to employee/faculty feedback.

Cons

Employees and faculty know that they will be fired if say anything. There is no academic freedom. There is no interest in using faculty knowledge to improve the quality of the educational experience for students.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Advice to students, the Board, the Department of Education, the accreditors, and the foundations: Your dollars are being used to produce check-box degrees and unfair treatment for employees. Check out how many HR people have come and gone. And why is it that most employees reporting to the president very quickly move on?

Great potential but many flaws in leadership, culture, and implementation.

I worked at Western Governors University

    Pros

Ability to work from home; innovative, though poorly executed, educational model

    Cons

Command and control leadership; fear-based leadership practices; inexperienced/ineffective middle management; rapid growth but little attention to culture; ill-conceived change initiatives; insular - too many WGU graduates and those who have been with the university for too long

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop running the university like a start-up. Great need for stability, processes, decentralized and shared leadership (real decision making is in the hands of only a few individuals).
