I have been working at Westinghouse

Pros

Great benefits and compensation, nice headquarters, good people

Cons

Growing too quickly, very disorganized, easy to get lost in the shuffle

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to improve the siloed chaotic operation of the business and start functioning as a unit - IT and data systems to support growth are not there and the business units do not function as though they all are part of the same company.

I have been working at Westinghouse

    Pros

They pay very well and it's a very nice facility. Overall, people are friendly.

    Cons

Where to start. Because of Toshiba's ownership, they tout a lot of "work-life balance". However, this could not be farther from the truth. Negotiate a lot of vacation time before accepting a position because no time is given for personal or sick time. You must use your vacation time. And you can negotiate the time. I learned that too late when I discovered that many others had but I foolishly had not. Be prepared to make up your time. They are sticklers for working exact hours but sadly, if you work 2, 3, or 4 hours overtime per day (which many do) don't expect the company to be lenient on you taking that time off later for personal reasons.
Regarding alternate work place options and 4/10 or 9/80 schedules (just instituted), it is entirely up to the manager of the department and many have already said they would not support it. Therefore those employees do not benefit from this option.
Also, the only way to move up and progress your career is if you are an engineer or a lawyer. Otherwise, what position you start with is what you stay with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take more real stock in employees work-life balance needs. Understand that it is not always possible to get a doctor appointment first thing in the morning or last thing in the evening. Back up the current policies with real actions and thorough support from all department managers. Offer clear advancement paths for employees other than engineers and lawyers.

    I worked at Westinghouse

    Pros

Plenty of room for advancement (it's mostly 50+ folks near retirement), good professional development road map, benefits are good but not great, management is trying their hardest to drag an elderly status-quo-supporting workforce up to current technologies

    Cons

Atmosphere can be stale, old, and slow; largely male-dominant demographic; company mindset, courtesy of the last hiring boom being in the 1970s, is often antiquated, intracompany knowledge transfer is too slow to capture all the expertise that will leave with the upcoming wave of retirements

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make your number one priority transferring expertise from senior engineers to mid-level engineers so you don't turn the clock back 20 years when they all retire
