Its a good resume builder

the job overtakes your life. They expect way too much out of the sales force and their is no consideration of work/life balance. Corprate continues to add responsibliities without taking less important responsibilities away. Working 60-70hr weeks every week is not worth it!!!! The training is not effective and this leads to being overworked. Too much time is spent trying to figure out how to do the job. Training and job expectations are not communicated well at all.

Advice to Management

To pay more attention to what is going on in the field. Decisions concerning the sales force should not be made at corporate without fully understanding the effect on the sales force and their accounts. Have realistic expectations and communicate them more efficienctly. Most reps have no idea what is going on. There are too many changes made without communicating why or the importance of the change.

    Pros

    Large company with resources in many areas. *Potential* to work on interesting products for the consumer market. Certain aspects of Whirlpool systems could be considered a best practice-for instance the Product Safety process. If you wish to learn, there is a great wealth of product knowledge relevant to the appliance industry. Benefits are on par with most companies in the industry. If you have a family, the Saint Joseph location is a nice place to raise your kids. There are opportunities to move around within the company.

    Cons

    Certain areas of the company are top heavy, with more chiefs and less indians. There is a lot of company politics-managers seem to be making decisions based on where they are heading next rather than the business at hand. This has resulted in some morale issues by those pulling the weight, and also in a lot of non-value added activity that may look good to the next higher level of management without adding productivity or improving morale. Additionally, there seems to be a lack of decisiveness in direction. This may be a disconnect between senior management and mid-management that may prove hazardous in the competitive environment of household appliances.

    Advice to Management

    Senior management is going to have to carefully evaluate the mid-management levels. While the salaried non-management people are generally productive and eager to put out good products, mid-management seems to be pursuing self-interest rather than contributing to the bottom line. Some of the behaviors on display may be walking an ethical tightrope. This is sapping morale and creating a lack of direction for employees. It might be time to clean house and flatten out the corporate structure.

    Pros

    Friendly people, lots of potential for improvement, #1 home appliances company in the world. This is a good place to work if you have a family and don't need a lot of professional growth. If you are young and ambitious, this probably isn't the right place for you.

    Cons

    Conservative environment, poor innovation, IT staff are way behind the curve, could become the next GM if they don't change their ways. Oh and did I mention they are extremely conservative and hate change like cats hate water? Well, they are. A common theme is "this is how we've always done it. why change? what's the value? what's the benefit? change is going to be hard... blah blah blah"

    Advice to Management

    Change is inevitable. Either embrace it or find someone else that can. This isn't the 1950's anymore. Think 5-10 years ahead, not how it was in the past.
