I worked at White & Case full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

Amazing life/work balance. Work a 60 hour work week, no problem, next Monday you'll get the day off or work remote.

Laid back culture. After work drinks kind of crowd.

Latest technologies and lots of high end gear to increase your marketability. Lots of projects to keep busy. Global organization so you can learn to work with a diverse team.

Cons

If your not a senior engineer, your value is questionable. You will be working to try to increase your visibility or else perish. Inter-office politics create major roadblocks to project objectives.

Not really a great place to grow unless you have the "gift of gab".

The IT department is ideal for someone young, hungry wanting to step up his/her skill set then move on after 3 years. Its also good for the MUCH older person just looking to sort of relax a bit since things are generally slow here. If you are someone in between, might not be a good fit for you.

In the past, this place was a major revolving door. Lots of people always think about leaving all the time, but the benefits here are hard to give up.

    Pros

Pay for associates is outstanding, the work may involve major, high profile matters, the firm's strong reputation

    Cons

Little or no opportunity of advancement to partner, even income partner, profitability is sub-par due to poor management, headquarters office is overstaffed and takes the best work away from other offices, vicious competitive atmosphere among partners

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn how to recognize, evaluate and develop the skills of all lawyers, develop a cooperative environment among partners, learn how to manage partners

Toxic Environment for Business Support Staff

I have been working at White & Case

    Pros

International exposure, nice office location in NYC, friendly co-workers and a half decent corporate cafeteria. Most of the interaction between the legal and business support is cordial within the NY office and other offices around the globe.

    Cons

Horrible management teams, outsourcing work in all departments to Manila, promotion opportunities and dysfunctional IT systems and information sharing. After two rounds of layoffs and outsourcing many functional positions to Manila the skeleton business support staff is suffering from low morale and as the economy improves people are escaping in droves. Not a good place to be on the support side right now.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dissolve the Firm and start all over again with a smaller set of offices.
