Whole Foods – “Wear a Poker Face”
Pros
Fair pay, good coworkers. Working with fine and fair ingredients. Promoting ideals for the planet and for sustainability. Can take pride in being part of a company which supports fair trade and micro-loans. Benefits are more than fair, and the paid time off is a real plus.
Cons
Management can wield powers at will, and based on personal vendetta, and still appear to be within the realm of fairness, according to their handbooks. In fact, the and I am quoting, tact is at my store: "in order to be respected, one has to be feared." The open policy of communication has not shown to be open. In fact, most people keep a tight lip in order to blend in. Cutbacks in accord with the faltering economy include nothing to blow one's nose with, a shortage of rubber gloves in the kitchen, one broom shared between three departments, and hours a day when no one is clocked in to man a station. Writeups, or permanently filed repremands can be made weeks after an offense occurs!
As yet, I have had no writeups, but am looking to get out when a more preferable job opening presents itself.
Advice to Senior Management
Be more fair and transparent, and let go of the idea respect and fear go hand in hand!
