I have been working at Whsmith part-time

    Pros

Friendly staff. I like books so enjoy working in the book department. Get offered a reasonable amount of extra hours.

    Cons

Minimum wage. They like to employ a lot of people part time and give them extra hours when they need the man hours. This means they will expect you to work when it suits them but might not have work for you when you need the hours.

Competitive pay compare to other similar jobs and far less pressure.

I have been working at Whsmith part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

This is retail so you do have to face customers but it's not bad as the supermarkets.
Pay is fair compare to other similar jobs.
Chances of promotion are quite good if you work in travel store which I mean by airports and train stations. I don't know about high streets. ( You have to stand out of the crowd or you do have to ask for promotion though for them to notice you)
    Good for students, flexible hours.

    Cons

LIke most of the companies there is a lack of communication between managers and sales assistants.
Supervisors and some of the part time managers are not full trained and do not take full responsibility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Talk to your staff and motivate them because they are the face of your company, if they are happy; customers are happy. Many people do leave because management are not that keen to retain and promote their staff. So do work on that.
