Whsmith – “OK place to work, but not many opportunities

Whsmith Sales Assistant in London, England (United Kingdom):   (Past Employee - 2006)

Pros

Employee discount. A good work environment, management seemed to be pretty friendly and they seem to understand what the work of a sales assistant is like.

Cons

Boring and repetitive, with few opportunities for advancement. Despite being told there would be bonuses at Christmas depending on special offer sales, these never materialised. Number and length of breaks varied between people in the same job and with the same pay, including some employees getting paid breaks and others only getting unpaid breaks. No holidays allowed during busy period, eg. Christmas, summer holidays, Easter etc. They prefer to halve your hours and hire someone else to work the other hours, so they can cut back on paid breaks. You only get 1 uniform to wear all week.
