I worked at Wikimedia Foundation as a contractor for more than a year

Pros

You have mostly upbeat, brilliant, and idealistic co-workers from all over the world, all working on a project that has global impact. Great opportunities abound if you are young and energetic.

Cons

The pace is quick compared to the average non-profit, but it can be glacial compared to other technology firms in the area. For workers based in San Francisco the pay can be low.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The WMF needs managers with deeper experience in technology leadership, and to be a flatter organization.

Wikimedia Foundation is changing the world. It's not easy, but does world-changing sound easy?

I have been working at Wikimedia Foundation full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Some of the smartest people in tech. A non-profit that's changing the definition of the term. Insane velocity. The chance to have your work affect hundreds of millions of readers. Get involved with the most complex and fascinating community on the net. Your friends and peers will be impressed. Wicked problems abound.

    Cons

Break-neck velocity. All the challenges and nuttiness of a tech start-up, and all of the intensity too. Wikimedia is not a 'break' from your current job - it's probably double the workload and double the complexity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus and more focus. Senior management is currently working on helping staff zoom in on core projects. This will help staff get something big done sooner, and give everyone a real sense of accomplishment. Getting things done really matters.

I have been working at Wikimedia Foundation

    Pros

All the passion of a mission driven non-profit, with crazy smart staff.
    Excellent benefits.
    Management who cares.
An environment with minimal hierarchy with a high level of transparency.

    Cons

Yes, it's a non-profit so comp isn't as high as tech companies, but staff are here for the mission.
Some growing pains from being a tiny foundation, but these are being addressed and structure is carefully being made.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep working to clarify policies and improve efficiency.
