I worked at Willamette University as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

There are a variety of job opportunities, from tutoring to interning with an administrative or academic department and doing research. Upper level employees such as professors or department heads are intelligent and interesting people to work for.

    Cons

Willamette's payroll department is slow and tedious to work with, making it more complicated than necessary to get paid in a timely manner.

    I worked at Willamette University

    Pros

As an employee of Willamette you will be contributing to the education of 2500+ students at one of the premier regional liberal arts and graduate institutions in the Pacific Northwest. The long list of distinguished alumni, University achievements and a culture of compassion for a lifetime of learning are all big pluses to being a part of the staff. Regardless of the department you are a part of you will play an important role and share in the responsibility of maintaining a high-calibre learning institution. You can't help but feel good about making a difference in the lives of students.

    Cons

While the mission, vision, and goals of the University are excellent, the University finds itself in the midst of transition and that becomes evident to all employees. Unfortunately there are very noticeable silos that exist - which does not contribute to good communication between departments or units (faculty, administrators, classified staff; different schools). In recent years there has been a vacuum of senior leadership to provide focus and structure to the big picture goals of the University. The result is a splintered employee base; the left hand and right hand are doing two different things. When interviewing it will be important to understand/clarify the promotion process and salary negotiations - two things that are murky and secret from current employees. Willamette is a University that has hired many, many, many of its own alumni.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Any institution of higher education is full of creativity and employees should be treated more as precious resources and less like individuals concerned only with punching their time card. It is a breath of fresh air to see that a new president has been appointed, with time the culture of the University can certainly be shifted to better support employees. However, attention should be given to the necessary house-cleaning that must happen following the tenure of the previous administration.
