Beware of false promises

Current Employee - Seasonal Sales Associate in Lone Tree, CO
Current Employee - Seasonal Sales Associate in Lone Tree, CO

I have been working at Williams-Sonoma part-time (less than an year)

Pros

Great discount - especially for people who love cooking using quality brands. Great people to work with and great customers.

Cons

Hired as a seasonal worker with the promise of 35 hours per week during season with possibility of permanent hire. Actual hours have been about 1 day per week for most of us "seasonals". Very frustrating!!!

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't over-hire with false promises of hours and actually TRAIN new hires!

I have been working at Williams-Sonoma full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent benefits. Some good, talented, and dedicated people. Employee discount. Excellent retail experience.

    Cons

Low pay. Disconnect between store management and corporate management. Difficult to retain talent because of payroll constraints. Lack of support given increasingly high expectations, resulting in deteriorating customer service. Inventory management issues - frequently out-of-stock on staple productsm thereby making the brand a less compelling specialty retailer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't preach "People First" unless you practice it. Upgrade key systems at the store level, not just for the employees' benefit, but for your customers. Waiting 3 minutes for your own web page to load is unacceptable in a day and age where cell phones are faster. Ignoring feedback from the field is setting your stores up for failure.

I have been working at Williams-Sonoma part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    Coworkers are nice
    40% Discount/20%-electronics
    Interesting tools/gadgets

    Cons

    Scheduling is ridiculous
-Either too much or too little
-"Because of Payroll" is heard way too often
      -Manipulative manager
    Poor transit execution
    Constant turnover of floor set
Poor communication between stores and coporate

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be honest - do not tell a set of employees one thing just to have them support an area of the store that is lacking and then have other employees do the exact opposite
Less intense - work will get done no matter the manner it is spoken
Let stores' stock associates have some control over shipment - to minimize overstocking of certain products

    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO
