I worked at Wind River full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Nice campus, you actually get your own office, some have views. Employees are well versed in their fields and contribute to the overall stability of the company. Great for self starters.

Cons

Poor senior management, little or no direction for advancement, very few women executives. Prefer to restructure departments over working with the talent they have.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide opportunities for personal growth to avoid costly restructures. Think beyond immediate financial gain of outsourcing overseas, and focus more on the longterm quality of industry solutions and product life cycles.

    Pros

Great place for a long-term steady place to work. Wind River is will to invest in its employees and has a history of treating them fairly.

    Cons

Not as fast paced as a start-up company. Wind River is an a mature market and has been around for over thirty years.

Disorganized, lots of internal competition among silos

I worked at Wind River full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Nice dog-friendly campus, private offices, autonomy. Breadth of industries served allows for tremendous on-the-job education and diversity. Name recognition in embedded systems. Good people and products, for the most part.

    Cons

Volatile sales organization. Cut-throat politics and internal competition for deals and assignments (and some who steal credit for your work). Compensation is not as competitive as HR believes. When a position is vacated there is no policy dictating that it's opened up for internal application, instead it's likely to be filled by somebody who knows somebody else ('empire building'), thus limiting your potential for career advancement. In my case VERY limited opportunity to apply my skills and prove myself to management - in my opinion they're currently overstaffed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Overlay sales teams with vertical experts, recognize your product managers are not vertical experts (stop flying them everywhere to meet with unqualified customers), and stop telling customers what the future of their industries are - listen to what they need instead. Overhaul your incentive system so services and field engineering and product engineering all march in order and not exclude/compete with each other. Stop focusing on "key accounts" and put more emphasis on growing SMB. Remember VxWorks is your flagship and foothold.
