Pros

People are passionate, the location and campus are beautiful. Students and staff are generally interesting people who are fun and easy to work with.

Cons

Being state-supported in South Carolina, the pay and job security aren't that great for many positions. State-mandated furlough days are a scary and realistic possibility.

Advice to Management

Don't forget the basics of what makes the university great...the administration seemed to be more concerned about raising funds (and administrator salaries) that delivering high-quality education and cultural experiences.

I worked at Winthrop University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Enjoyed many of the people I worked with. Campus is nice.

    Cons

Some areas of campus feel a bit outdated, rusting over. Bathrooms in Thurmond on some floors are in need of revamp.

I have been working at Winthrop University full-time

    Pros

Family Friendly and flexible environment offered in a bedroom community of Charlotte, NC. SC state benefit plan and opportunity to grow your skills if willing to invest the time. You wear many hats in this office.

    Cons

Salary will be 10 - 20k less than comparable job in professional sector. There is also a tendency for new hires to be retained at a rate greater than existing staff members; this creates a challenge to morale. Career staff members expect you to 'donate' your time without compensation.
