Pros

Growing company with many business units that offer broad experience and geographic opportunities. The Amsterdam HQ does try to make sure all associates are updated. So they send out regular communications and expect the GMs to do the same. They do seem to try to present a balanced view of the business, with some challenges/bad news mixed in. They also have many opportunities to telecommute. The benefits are great and kick in quickly. The offices in NY are in Chelsea, right in the heart of all that is cool and hip. They also have opportunities/offices all over the US, so best bet is to just look at their jobsite for what is open at any moment in time.

Cons

Structure of company is a bit cumbersome with business units competing for business against each other. This leads to a lot of frustration for the sales teams who find out from customer prospects that one sales rep from another branch is misinforming them about their product/service. Marketing strategy is very hard to develop as well since you are tripping up against the other WK service offerings. There was also for me a sense that the managers were working in isloation of each other, rather than getting a feeling that they all were pulling together with a common vision and goal. A bit of "every man for himself."

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Align products and services to customer groups. Stop confusing the customer with the many branches of Wolters Kluwer.

    Pros

As a business publisher, not a consumer driven org WK has tremendous opportunity. The potential for out of the box growth and personal contributions is high IF you land in an area where the executive team has political clout. Many of the publishing areas are mature, but have solid business plans to reach sizable growth objectives. As an executive, there are opportunities to move among the divisions and find upward career growth through the talent management program.

    Cons

A company who lives in the shadow of the much larger competitors of Thomson and Elsevier but who COULD be more aggressive, creative, and agile than those other publishers. The Health division in particular is suffering from competitive envy. There they dont make a move before the rest of the industry. The executive team is self absorbed and lacks leadership /motivational skills. The Health division is a hive of political connections and entitlements. There is constant misdirection and sleight of hand by the division execs who are caught up in fads and misplaced priorities -- like the unhealthy obsession with Six Sigma, without a real sense of its value or purpose.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus! Stop trying to be the "next big thing" and earn your way to a lead position with content by embracing the inherant strength of the staff and the wealth of knowledge held by the business units' management.

    Pros

There is plenty of room for growth potential and advancement. If you want to learn and are eager and willing then this is the place to be.

    Cons

This is a team environment. If you are not a team player and have no interest in rising above your current status, then this is not the place for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work.
