Current Employee - Mechanical Engineer Intern in Houston, TX
Current Employee - Mechanical Engineer Intern in Houston, TX

I have been working at Wood Group Mustang as an intern (less than an year)

Pros

Great experience for any college student looking for an engineering experience in the oil and gas industry. Easy to get along with one another and also the pay rate for the interns can vary depending on the department you are in. These people will do anything to keep you if look like a potential employee. Flexible and reasonable managers.

Cons

When work gets too slow, the has to let go many people but unlike other companies, Mustang strives to keep their employees and try to have their lay offs to a very small minimum. As intern, I didn't see any cons about being an intern here.

Great learning, but compensation does not match individual efforts.

I have been working at Wood Group Mustang full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people working here have a high human quality and high technical skills. The projects go smoothly with lots of individual contributors to make the projects successful.

    Cons

The corporate structure is not transparent and with a clear vision. Mergers and fusions are designed without care and without keeping the key differentiators of former companies. The managers barely deal with chasing fire but without getting to know their people closely. High performers are only recognized by their peers but so far there is not a way the management can enhance and contribute to the development of people with good skills and high quality. Sometimes low performers can access to salary rises and bonuses just by playing the corporate game, but not contributing to deliver a better quality to the clients.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Wood Group CEO Bob Keiller has done a decent job in structuring an giving overall guidance for the integration and formalization of the companies under Wood Group umbrella. Wood Group Mustang president Steve seems he doesn't have a clear vision about how to take WGM to the next level and make a new company stronger than the former parts. The WGM president don't have the "eye of the tiger" thing and is maybe lost thinking about what Mustang used to be. Steve, you either have to step out or redefine yourself and make your contributions viewed more clearly.

I have been working at Wood Group Mustang full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Wood Group Mustang is a company that embodies taking care of their people. They provide great benefits, flexible work schedules, and great people to work with. They have offices located in Katy and on the East Side of town which appeals to both sides of town.

    Cons

Would like to see more self taught training provided. Some companies offer a online school that employees can take classes that appeal to them.
