I have been working at Worcester Academy

Pros

The kids at WA are terrific in every way. The student body is diverse, and it is happily engaged in a multitude of healthy activities. The school is blessed to have some outstanding veteran teachers and coaches in the areas of athletics, drama, and music.

Cons

The administration is often secretive and anxious. Through decree they continue to add more on the job menu without taking anything off. In addition they are inclined to invoke new policies without input from the greater teaching community.

I worked at Worcester Academy full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Unique, diverse, range of students who for the most part want to learn...yes parents paying a great deal of money for them to go there, so motivation. Updates to the buildings recently have put the school more in the 21st century but some of the school ambiance was lost. Lunches are included, no need to go out an find a place to eat during the school year.

    Cons

The are two "classes" at the school - teaching and administrative support staff. The teaching staff looks down on the administrative staff although many have not even taken the "standard education classes" at college. Administrative staff work year round including school vacation weeks, while teachers do not. Admin staff given less percentage of raise than teaching staff.

I have been working at Worcester Academy full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The school enrolls nice and smart kids, and there are lots of programs for them to participate in; for the most part, the students are happy; the institution has a great history in prepping kids for college.

    Cons

The administration has become engulfed in ed land public school edubabble and slogans. They have tried to implement change. They have been vague and lacking in specifics and without explaining what awaits at the other end.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management has strayed away from what works at the school. It's best at this juncture for the school to get back on the path that has made the institution successful. The management needs to understand that change must be homegrown and include everybody and that the faculty deserved to paid well and have a fair work load. My advice to management is to start thinking long term and come to terms that the institution is not the property of the people who are managing it. The institution belongs to past, present, and future generations. The school cannot afford public relation blunders.
