Great people, awful paid-employee vs. support staff dichotomy,

Administrative Assistant (Former Employee)
Orlando, FL

Pros- Coworkers are enjoyable, friendly, and will never say a bad thing about anyone.
- Company (generally) respects families and is willing to work with you for appointments, etc.
- The IT team is excellent for an NPO.
- Benefits are ok - sick time accumulates fast.

Cons- Definitely an "inner circle" type company with a cast system.
- Your worth as an employee is dependent on how well you drink the kool-aid.
- If your theology is anything but emergent, you'll have a hard time at HQ.
- The current business/company structure is unsustainable.
- Medical costs are high due to a high average age.
- Directors are assigned without proper experience, and have no accountability. Support staff suffers because of that. The organization would crumble without their support staff, and yet they are treated as less-valuable.
- Conflict-management or personality differences on teams are handled by axing the lowest person in the caste system.
- It's very much about who you know, who you spend time with outside of work hours, and how much you are willing to brown nose.
- The people in HR that handle reviews, write-ups, and ultimately firing people are incompetent, don't listen, and don't read documentation presented to defend cases.

Advice to Senior Management- Find new HR staff that actually want to listen to paid employees.
- Learn to value administrative staff more, and have a more effective way of handling conflict.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Pros: Great missions org doing language development (literacy, orthography), Bible Translation, community development, and other good things. A good place for technical… Cons: Some things do fall through the cracks in such a large organization. Experiences vary widely from location to location, and field workers may be expected… Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend More
